Marina Abramovic and Ulay - The Lovers (1989)
The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk (1988) is a seminal performance piece Marina Abramović and Ulay. It marked both the culmination of their 12-year personal and artistic partnership and their final, decisive separation. Originally conceived in the late 1970s as a celebratory ritual—where the two planned to walk from opposite ends of the Great Wall of China to meet in the middle and marry; the project took nearly a decade to secure official permits and diplomatic clearance from Chinese authorities. By the time permission was granted in 1988, their relationship had fractured. The journey transformed from a celebration of union into a monumental ritual of farewell.
