The Park - Kohei Yoshiyuki (1980)
1/5

In the early 1970s, Kohei Yoshiyuki was a commercial photographer working in Tokyo when a single evening in Shinjuku’s Chuo Park changed his entire approach to photography. Walking through the park with a colleague, he noticed a couple lying on the ground. Soon after, he saw a man quietly moving toward them, followed by another—like shadows drawn to a private moment. At the time, infrared flash technology was not widely known, but through research he discovered that Kodak produced infrared flashbulbs. Yoshiyuki returned again and again throughout the decade to Chuo Park and to other parks in Tokyo. Yoshiyuki’s images reveal a hidden world of desire, risk, and social tension, an undercurrent of Tokyo that most people never see.
