Masahisa Fukase - Bukubuku (2004)
1/4

Bukubuku (ブクブク), published in 2004 by Hysteric Glamour and edited by Nobuhiko Kitamura, takes its title from the Japanese onomatopoeia for bubbling water. The series comprises 79 black-and-white self-portraits taken by Masahisa Fukase in his apartment bathtub over the course of a month in 1991. It was the last complete body of work Fukase produced before a fall down the stairs at his favourite Shinjuku bar in June 1992 left him in a coma for twenty years, until his death in 2012. Throughout his career, Fukase used photography to interrogate his own existence. In Bukubuku, water becomes an optical filter, distorting, bending and fragmenting his physical features. The title evokes a gradual dissolution of the self.
