In 1992, Nan Goldin visits Tokyo for the first time and is struck by the city’s underground energy. During this period, she comes into contact with Nobuyoshi Araki. Two years later, in 1994, the Shiseido Gallery in Tokyo commissions a joint project by the two artists.
